Your test code and octaverc run without problem on a development version (4f2e46473153) with gnuplot 4.2.5.

The default font is transferred from the root figure (0) to the new plot which I checked with get(gca).

I also tried changing the default font and looking at the output results in a pdf viewer and the font is being set correctly.

Please try compiling a recent development release and re-open this report if you still encounter an error.

Run the following test, using the attached .octaverc

[x,y,z]=peaks(50);
h=surf(x,y,z);
xlabel('X Label');
ylabel('Y Label');
title('Peaks(50)');
print('test1.pdf','-debug','-F:8')

The resulting error message is:

gnuplot> set terminal pdfcairo enhanced color solid 8 size 8.5,11
^
line 0: unrecognized terminal option

line 0: warning: Too many axis ticks requested (>6)
line 0: warning: Too many axis ticks requested (>6)
line 0: warning: Too many axis ticks requested (>4)

And the print commands log is attached
