Insert all needed modules before ata:
insmod linux
insmod ls
insmod ata
BIOS disks are disabled when ata.mod is used because using them together will lead to unpredictable results

--disk-module=ata, =="error no disk" from usb boot, using ls I see the ata device that is the expresscard. Booting from normal install, and insmod ata does same, but I lose grub commands as soon as ata comes up and am stuck in rescue mode

There are 3 possible reasons:
-missing initrd
-incorrect root=
-incorrect kernel compile config
If a grub.cfg generated by grub-mkconfig is at fault please open another bug report for it. Since this bug is resolved I'm marked it as closed

Thank You very very much! Now grub is working.
But Maybe You know how to enable ata disks support in the kernel? (Grub boots kernel, but kernel doesn't recognise this SSD).

Заранее спасибо:)

By default GRUB2 uses BIOS to access disks. So BIOS-invisible disks are invisible. To change this behaviour add --disk-module=ata to grub-install command

Grub2 (from Ubuntu 9.10) is not able to boot from my ExpressCard SSD (I have HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook).
Grub is located on my primary SATA HDD, but /boot directory is located on ExpressCard SSD.
So when I turn on my notebook, I see message "no such disk" and
grub rescue>_
I think it's because grub doesn't recognise this SSD...
