I'd say the difference is that your hard disk is dying.
Make a backup of your iPod as long as you can. Good luck :-)

-h.

PS: There's the off chance that the error might be caused by fluky USB cables or a shaky HUB. Try again connecting your device directly to your PC, run 'mount' to see which device your ipod is.
Probably /dev/sdc or /dev/sdc1. Then run

'umount /dev/sdc'

and

'badblocks -sv /dev/sdc'

if this read-only doesn't show any error you can try a read-write test with

'badblocks -svn /dev/sdc'

And as always. Making backups is a good idea.

I get the following output from gnupod_addsong when trying to add a 30MB song to my 80GB iPod classic. Usually works, not sure what is different. Also posting dmesg output.

gnupod_addsong.pl Version 0.99.8 (C) Adrian Ulrich
+ [MP3 ][ 3] 03 - God and Contemporary Scie | Can the modern world believe i | The Teaching Company

      • FATAL *** Could not copy 'Can the Modern World Believe in God/04 - God and the Journey Within.MP3' to '/media/bryipod//iPod_Control/Music/f42/g1_the_Journey_Within.MP3': Input/output error
