I assume this was some minor aberration

This is the configuration I use all the time. It has never crashed for me. It is also working fine under Windows Vista (the 0.8.12 release) as I now perch a laptop on my harpsichord when tuning, rather than stretching a microphone across the room.
Can you see if you can find out more - you have always had trouble with the combination of portaudio and other things (jack?...)? If you run it under gdb can you get any sense (recently gdb seems to be coping better with the real time stuff)? Or put some printfs in to find out what is dying. It could after all be some latent bug, or just a conflict at hardware or driver level - some return value of an initialization or setting that is being ignored ...

This causes a crash:

compile with Fluidsynth
select input->audio
