Hi,

according to the user who brought up this issue in the first place, the problem has disappeared meanwhile.
The bug was found in 2010 in Debian Lenny, which was upgraded to Debian Squeeze in 2011. I suspect that this somehow made the problem disappear. (We have no Lenny systems anymore, so that I cannot compare.)

From my side, you may simply close the bug.

I appreciate your work on the problem
and apologize for the late reply,

Burkhard Bunk.

Hi,

I worked on the spellcheck in may. I upgraded the spellchecker to aspell, and I suppose that this bug has been fixed. Can you please test and confirm ?

I want to confirm the bug and add a few remarks:

(1) our systems run Debian Lenny,
(2) the problem is observed in 64bit (amd64) installations,
but not in 32bit (i386),
(3) error messages "Error: no dictionary for american" and
"Error: ispell does not respond" may occur with a certain
probability (50%, say), but spell checking works upon retry.

In other words, the problem is not strictly reproducable, but
can be demonstrated (and avoided!) with some patience.

A fix or workaround would be highly appreciated.
Please let me know if I can help with further info or testing.

Best regards,
Burkhard Bunk.

When I check text for spelling errors, in the statusbar appear the message "Error: no dictionary for american".

This is despite of the package "iamerican" is installed on my Debian Linux system.
