Fixed in revisions 7943 and 7944.

I fixed the bug by putting '$' characters around the selection before conversion, when pasting LaTeX inside a mathematical formula. Of course, this will dramatically break pasting ordinary text and we have no means of knowing whether the user is pasting maths or text. Nevertheless, inside formulas, it is reasonable to assume that we are copying and pasting maths.

Maybe, some users want to paste " when $x$ equal 0" in a math environment, and would have wanted it to be inserted in a <text> tag.

So, what should be done is not straightforward to decide.

I also think this can be a bit dangerous. A badly interpreted content (normal text interpreted as math expression) could leads to very strange results (e.g. <math|when>x<math|equal0>).

Heuristically, we could consider, when pasting in a math environment, to make some tests on the considered string (presence of paragraphs, math envs changes, math symbols or LaTeX macros, etc.), in order to determine if it is math content or text content.

If we guess that the content is pure math, we could simply decorate the considered string with '$' before sending it to the converter. If we guess that the content is not pure math, we could insert the converted content in a <text> tag.

This seems to me a complex issue. On one side if I copy "with" from LaTeX to TeXmacs I would like to have "with" both in math and in text mode. If I copy "ab=c" in math mode then it should really be interpreted as "a b = c". In some sense this is a problem linked to the fact that on the LaTeX side there is not enough context to derive if the expression is a word or a concatenation of different symbols. Maybe the converter can try to be smart sometimes but I do not see a clear design which would solve the issue.

Suggestions are welcome.

When pasting "ab" by "Edit/Paste from/LaTeX", it should be pasted as two separated (with a space between) letters, not as the operator "ab".
