r2630 on trunk "fixed" it, though the loop device trick mentioned at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2009-09/msg00488.html needs to be applied. It'll most likely be commented at a more central place and probably be integrated into grub-mkrescue.

As already mentioned on the user mailinglist:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-grub/2008-11/msg00011.html
and on the devel mailinglist:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2009-09/msg00486.html
my BIOS makes a crappy attempt to be smart and fails to boot GRUB properly. I had to use a hack (explained by phcoder) to make it find GRUB on my primary partition by putting it in a loop device and install grub on that loop device. However that only works for that crappy BIOS so I was told to install GRUB into the MBR also, so that I can use it on sane systems. However after doing that, it gets stuck on printing "GRUB " again on my laptop. Now I was told to open a bug here, so consider it done. :)
