/etc/grub.d/* are configuration files too. They can be changed by
user as he sees fit. /etc/default/grub lists only the most common
and useful options. Everything else would only encumber it. If
there is enough demand for your feature this point of view may
change though

Hi,

Debian's grub 0.9 packages allowed the generation of more than two boot entries per Linux kernel version installed. This allowed people to have different entries for production use, single user mode, serial console or different run levels.

grub 2 seems to be hardcoded to generate the production use entry and a single user mode entry (which can be optionally disabled in later versions).

Please consider adding the possibility to define one's own alternative entries. For example, I haven't been booting into single user mode once in ten years, but I like to have a possibility to boot to serial console, or to run level 3 from an unedited grub.cfg.

There is also a bug report in the Debian BTS,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=488840
and a discussion on grub-devel, beginninghttp://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2008-07/msg00011.html

I am filing this bug for completeness.

Savannah bug 24368, which is referred in some Debian bug log, doesn't solve this, this bug was about the option to disable the single user mode entry.

Greetings
Marc
