I wouldn't. Screen has no way of knowing you're running another screen under it. Try C-a a d : you need to escape the C-a in order for screen to send it on to whatever's underneath it. Another common technique is to use a different command character for the screen running underneath. See the manual for how to do that.

It's easy to reproduce, this is what I did:

local# ssh user@host1
host1# screen
host1# ssh user@host2
host2# screen -dr
host2# press and hold ctrl, press A + D
host1#

This will detach the session on host1. I would expect that the screen session on host2 would detach first.
