As far as I know this is fixed or at least invalid.

Thank you very much for your posts on this. I am fairly sure no-one has recently figured out the program in this area, there have been so many things bolted on.
I put in the direct portaudio output quite recently - that would be the init_audio_out() thing I think. IIRC I left it re-starting the entire thing on every note, expecting this to be way too heavy, only to find it working, and of course, never looking at it again. So I am slightly surprized that it fails to fire off the first note...
Well, I am working elsewhere in the program at present, so I am glad things are functional for you,
I'll set this to postponed, so that it will get read next time someone spends time sorting out the interaction between the jack code, the csound code, the /dev/sequencer code ...
thanks again
Richard Shann
BTW pulseaudio is the only thing you mentioned that left me wondering...

Original poster here following up --

I examined this problem in more depth, and it's a problem with the direct audio output. For some reason the sequencer doesn't work: when starting Denemo, I get 'Cannot get info on soundcard: Invalid argument'. So, ok, that's why it's using /dev/dsp at all. And I can see from looking at the code that the behaviour is to some extent intentional - that is, the direct audio output stream is initialized at the beginning of the program if required, and never closed.

I worked around the problem by adding a call to stop_audio() in playback.c just before the external midi player starts up. I don't want to submit this as a patch because a) it's a hideous kludge that doesn't check to see whether it's necessary, and b) it introduces a new problem, which is that after playback finishes, the first note you type in sounds only as a click and not as a note, because it's doing the init_audio_out() thing again. I haven't grasped the program flow well enough yet to see where the right place to do that would be.

So, in short, this is no longer a big issue for me, but my solution to it is a bit messy. If there's a known good way around this, or if anyone wants to pursue it further, please let me know.

Now it's back to playing with Denemo!

Thanks,

Victoria

Hello all,

I'm running Denemo 0.8.4 on Ubuntu Hardy (gnome), with pulseaudio, without jack or lash. I'm new to Denemo and so far I'm really thrilled with it, so a big thanks to everyone who's worked on it!

The one problem I'm having is with playing notes as they're entered. The notes play fine, but after that Denemo will not play the normal midi output, and other sound on my system will not work until I close Denemo.

I get this message in my syslog:
pulseaudio[5935]: module-alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:0: Device or resource busy

And while the problem is occurring, lsof shows:
denemo 13256 blahblah 6r CHR 14,3 11891 /dev/dsp

The sequencer device in Denemo is the default /dev/sequencer, which I do have on my machine.

I've tried running as an ordinary user and as root with no difference. I also tried launching Denemo with pasuspender, but that didn't help either.

I'm getting this behavior with two laptops, so it's not specific to the hardware. However, they're configured quite similarly as far as the software goes.

Can someone help me out with this? Is there just a setting somewhere I'm missing? I keep thinking this must have an obvious solution.

Let me know what additional information I should supply.

Thanks,

Victoria
