It's not possible for screen to "sever a connection" to something it doesn't know anything about. It's certainly possible for screen not to pass through some special piece of information from the parent terminal to its children (such as to change the environment variables of the background process to match those of newly attached displays which is how X sessions tend to get interrupted; or terminal-specific magic such as frame-buffer info); but that's not what screen is designed to do. Screen is designed to be a terminal multiplexer; it's not meant to be a "terminal-plus-pasteserver-passthrough-proxy", or a "terminal-plus-X-session-proxy", though both of those things would likely be very useful (and someone should write such passthrough proxies if they don't already exist, so they may be used together with screen).

As a user of mvim, MacVim and screen, I reported to the MacVim developer that, when I start mvim, I can not cut and paste between MacVim sessions spawned from it to other apps. I can cut and paste if I start MacVim directly, but then am unable to include any command line switches.

The developer responded that this was a typical problem when using screen, explaining that "screen severs the connection to the local pasteboard server for all process started from it" although I can see no bug report about it here. I do find that it only happens if I start mvim from screen. It does not happen if I start mvim from any terminal session outside screen.
