Given that the help system was pretty much rewritten from scratch in Octave 3.2.0 it seems reasonable to close this bug.

Can we close this bug?

Can you reproduce this problem with Octave 3.2 or the current development sources?

I modified Fink's package and added the debug flag. When running from the debugger I get ...

octave:1> which place
place is the user-defined function from the file
/sw/share/octave/3.0.5/m/control/base/place.m
octave:2> edit place
path = /Users/bpabbott/octave/place.m
octave:3> which place

Program received signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS, Could not access memory.
Reason: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at address: 0xbf7fffbc
0x91589d09 in __getcwd ()

BTW, I have "/Users/bpabbott/octave" in my path.

The problem I observed was with 3.0.5 installed via Fink. When I built from sources myself, and with debugging enabled, I do not see the crash. I'll experiment further to see if I can track down the problem to either Fink's package or to Octave.

I can't duplicate this problem with 3.0.5 or the current development sources on my system (Debian).

Can you run Octave under gdb and find out where it crashes?

Running 3.0.5, installed using the Fink package manager, on Mac OSX a segmentation fault is produced by the following sequence.

(1) help <m-file in control>
(2) edit <m-file in control>
(3) help <m-file in control>

Where <m-file in control> may be replaced by any m-file in .../octave/3.0.5/m/control/base/. For example, both "place" and "bode" produce seg-faults.

Full bug_report is attached.
