It's not MANDATORY. Was a bug not being able to compile w/out curl.
It's fixed in trunk.

It was
recalcati@recalcati-laptop:/media/discone-100GB-resiserfs/oe_fuffa$ md5sum gnash-0.8.5.tar.bz2
366f703c2eb1747e4109602b75439ff4 gnash-0.8.5.tar.bz2

not development snaphot.

So
recalcati@recalcati-laptop:/media/discone-100GB-resiserfs/oe_fuffa/gnash-0.8.5$ sudo apt-get install libcurl3-dev libspeex-dev
[sudo] password for recalcati:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libcurl3-dev is a virtual package provided by:
libcurl4-openssl-dev 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.3
You should explicitly select one to install.
E: Package libcurl3-dev has no installation candidate
recalcati@recalcati-laptop:/media/discone-100GB-resiserfs/oe_fuffa/gnash-0.8.5$ sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev

and:
sudo apt-get install libspeex-dev

then:
./configure
no more RECOMMENDED

but RECOMMENED has to be changed in MANDATORY or similar.

make
..
...
yes .. works!

./gui/gnash testsuite/samples/subshapes.swf
run!

thx

Now I'll try it as epiphany plugin.
After X86.
I'll try it on Cortex A8 using openembedded.

Please update again (assuming you're building a development snapshot). Or fetch one to confirm the fix.

Also, note that the bug only occurred when you tried to build
Gnash with no CURL support, which would mean NO network support.

CURL should be reported by ./configure as a RECCOMMENDED dependency.

curl_adapter.cpp:54: error: redefinition of ‘static std::auto_ptr<gnash::IOChannel> gnash::NetworkAdapter::makeStream(const std::string&, const std::string&, const std::string&)’
curl_adapter.cpp:45: error: ‘static std::auto_ptr<gnash::IOChannel> gnash::NetworkAdapter::makeStream(const std::string&, const std::string&, const std::string&)’ previously defined here

Makes sense.

ubuntu 8.10 updated now.

The last part of configure messages is: "
Gnash should still compile even with these warnings.
If it doesn't, report the warnings as a bug.
"

Before compiling I have done

sudo apt-get install libgif-dev qt4-dev-tools libgtk2.0-dev libpango1.0-dev libatk1.0-dev libagg-dev

sudo apt-get install kdelibs5-dev
