I made a few additional small changes. BTW, these files are in the Mercurial archive using the names README.ftp (for the main README file on the ftp site) and README.devel (for the README file in the bleeding-edge directory on the ftp site). I updated those files and then copied them to the ftp site.

Here's one final change. Since octave-3.3.51.tar.gz does not have an .hg directory "hg export" fails. This just adds the sentence 'If you are using the Mercurial sources a patch generated with "hg export" is preferred.' to the end of the first bullet point.

I made some simple changes as a proposal to update the file (attached).

  1. URL's to ftp.che.wisc.edu are updated to http://octave.org/ or http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/ links.
  1. I thought about adding something about 'hg export', but I don't think this is relevant for the snapshots? We could ask people who have trouble with the snapshots to first install the mercurial sources, but perhaps that defeats the purpose of the snapshots? So I left that part out.
  1. The original README says to submit bugs to the maintainers list. Do we want problems with the snapshots sent directly to maintainers@ or to the bug tracker?
  1. I added a mention of http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/bugs.html for guidelines on submitting a bug report.
  1. Is -unavailable- valid? It's listed as where to report problems with the development sources on http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/download.html. I used -unavailable- because that's what's in my mail folders and I wasn't certain.
  1. I removed the octave-testers@ stuff.
  1. I didn't even attempt to modify the signature because that seemed weird, but jwe should probably at least look at the email address and the date.

Instructions for using the development code base refer to Mercurial and suggest reading the README at ftp://ftp.octave.org/pub/octave/bleeding-edge/README.

The suggested README is out of date.

1) It refers to the code base being kept in CVS.
2) The file refers to the octave-testers mailing list which no longer seems to exist.
3) It suggests submitting patches in context diff format but it would be even better to submit patches in Mercurial format using 'hg export'
