IIRC, this has been fixed recently in the development sources. It was never true for all commands, only for some that erroneously claimed to require a window. Please mention which specific commands were failing in this way.

If screen has been started as
screen -m -d -S mySocketName myCmd
piping commands with
screen -X ...
has no effect.

Using
screen -X -p 0 ...
or reattaching the screen once (using -R) works.

At least this should be documented with -X
