The practical solution is probably to start another gnubg instance, copy the gnubg id of the "point of doubt", paste it in the second instance and experiment there. Then go back to the initial match.

Barring convincing feedback, I will close the bug in a few weeks.

The workaround is to save the game to disk at the point of exploration and then reload it when you want to continue playing the game for real.

This would also be the easiest method of automation - provide a button or menu option to save a snapshot of the match and another to reload. A basic implementation could be a session-only singleton option which uses a fixed filename. That would mean that nothing is needed from the user beyond the [Save] and [Restore] button clicks.

Thanks for your feedback!
I am an enthusiast user of gnugb for some years already.

I'll try to explain my point. I want to evaluate my play. At some point in the game I am not sure what to play. I choose, hopefully, for the best position. Some rolls later I can see the result. But I am still not sure whether it was a good decision. Therefore I move back to my point of doubt. Than I move on with another position and after some rolls in this new 'branch' I can come to a conclusion. But I still want to play the original branch. Therefore I have to move back to my point of doubt and play again the original play. I can only play the original play if the dice-generator is also moving backward and forward with my play.
This way of moving back and forward with dices is not unusual.

Greetings Ron Mentink Holland

The dice sequence isn't stored, and is lost with the rest of the match once you go back and make a new move. We could store it if we wanted to, I guess, but what would the point be?

I sometimes move back a few rolls in a game for learning purpose. But when I have moved back a few rolls and start again from that point, the dice sequence is different. It would be very nice to have the option that, when moving back, the dice generator also moves back showing the same numbers.
I am in doubt whether it is a bug or a feature request.
