Changing to 2000 seems to work fine so far. Thank you.

your screenrc says

# Keep a decent history, dammit!
defscrollback 1000000

This is One Million lines of history, per window.
For my personal use, I find 2000 more than sufficiently decent.

defscrollback 1000000
can plausibly consume 140mb of memory over time.

Please check your memory usage with a
defscrollback 2000
setting.

I'm using FreeBSD 7.1 on a Celeron based ASUS EEE-PC without swap. Screen, running in Gnome-terminal, seems to use 140+ mb per window---as reported by top.
