Thanks for applying it!

As for the bug itself, sorry I must have expressed myself badly, it's not a bug in gnustep, it's rather a result of source-based distros (and USE flags which allow features customization). Our QA team explains it better than me ;)

There are tools to rebuild packages that get broken when an automagic dependency is removed of course, but it's faster/more user-friendly when we can disable/enable the feature manually (the package manager can handle it all by itself).

Thanks ... that looked like a reasonable/useful addition, so I applied your patch.

However, I don't think it's a bug in GNUstep if the package on Gentoo fails to track the dependency. Surely that's a matter for the Gentoo packager to handle, either automatically by the packaging system or manually by whoever maintains the package (I would hope that the packaging software supports automatic tracking of library dependencies).

Hi,

some Gentoo users got a surprise when disabling/removing zeroconf support on their system, as this broke libgnustep-base (linked against libdns_sd.so as it was present on the system).

At configure time, HAVE_MDNS does not have an enable/disable option, and is automatically enabled if the library is present (either from mDNSResponder or avahi).

Here's a patch to configure.ac (gnustep-base-1.18.0) that adds this option, you'll probably want to change the option name and help description (I've used zeroconf, as it is the option name often used when checking for avahi and friends) if you commit it
