svn rev 2068 did add a parttool command which you can use to hide partitions.

To the UUIDs: Well you don't have to use them, grub-mkconfig/update-grub generates always `set root="(hdx,y)"' along with the `search --fs-uuid' line.
And for the kernel root= option you can set `GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true' in /etc/default/grub and then rerun update-grub/grub-mkconfig.

I am convinced from using grub, but in versions after V 0.97 i lost my faith in grub.

1. I miss the old functionality of hiding partitions
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=505905

2. I have problems with the new syntax.
Especially using this UUID's is very ugly and makes grub very difficult to transport from one system to another.
It is also a big problem if a system will not boot.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518791

There is also nearly no documentation of the newer versions of grub. :-(

I hope this problem can be solved, otherwise the problems will grow (specially in debian) and grub is not the best solution as boot-manager anymore.
