Hi Rob,
are there any news from this side? I would like to bundle Gnash with IceCat binary versions and don't download it separately. Any suggestion?
Thanks.

Making an XPI package is more complex than building an rpm or deb. I believe GNU projects primarily do source distributions. The XPCOM support used for xpi packaging appears to be broken, (I had to set the GNASH_PLAYER environment variable) so till that is fixed, there is little reason to build xpis. "make xpi" works for me fine on Fedora 10, I need to see what the problem was that effected centos, and make sure it also works on debian derived platforms. More than an xpi, I'd try "make snapshot" which builds a binary taball, installable on anything, much like IceCat.
The plan is to have our automated build farm kick out an xpi, deb, rpm, and binary and source tarballs every night. It's a lot of work to make it all happen, so it takes time.
I did just now test Gnash, it works fine with IceCat once it's installed. I'll look into xpi building after I complete the current task I'm working on. After pushing the release out, I just wanted to hack on Gnash code, instead of packaging support for a bit... I wouldn't have added xpi support if I didn't think it was important.

Hi Rob -- rpm|deb|whatever is not a good solution. For one thing, tt is far from obvious what to download, looking at http://getgnash.org/packages/snapshots/fedora/. Making every user do this and then figure out the arcane commands to install them seems like a total nonstarter to me.
Second, there is the even worse problem that not all the world uses or wants to use rpm|deb|whatever. We distribute a "vanilla" binary package for IceCat. As is usual for GNU packages, it is trivial to install and does not affect the distro's system in any way, unlike rpm|deb|whatever, which induce all kinds of maddening problems.
If you can make rpm's at "stable" points, can't you just as easily also make an xpi? And then we will distribute that xpi with IceCat.
Being able to update the xpi in the usual Firefox way is another matter; I wouldn't expect that to work seamlessly and it's not important that it do so. What's important is that we have a usable Gnash to distribute with IceCat. So far, we don't.
Thanks,
Karl

Yes, it is surely a good idea to add the dependency directly to the package, in the same way as we are doing for the IceCat .deb.
But our idea is to offer a generic binary version too, in the same way Mozilla Firefox does and in this case we can't use a specific package (.rpm or .deb), this is why we still wish to have a .xpi :)

The XPIs are intended to be more for for snapshots, as they support auto updating. Why not just distribute Gnash as an rpm, and rpms of the release and other snapshots are at http://getgnash.org, and I know "make rpm" works. :-) Your IceCat rpm could have the Gnash rpm listed as a dependency, so it would then load Gnash too.

as you said it is not a critical problem just I would like to have a xpi package to distribute with the GNU IceCat binaries.
Can I find a binary xpi (for i386) that I can use? It would make GNU IceCat distribution easier.
Thanks.

Hum, for me it worked on Fedora 10, but not Centos 5. On my Centos 5 (amd64) machine I get a whole different set of weird problems. Luckily packaging isn't a critical bug, as it's usually only done by developers. Still, it'd be nice to work. As I do have a Centos 5 machine, I'll track this down, but it's low priority for the next few days unless you desperately need to build an xpi.

Sat 07 Mar 2009 09:28:21 AM UTC, original submission:
the make xpi command doesn't work anymore
It happens on the 0.8.5 and on the bazaar trunk versions.
The same problem is reproducible on RedHat Fedora 10.
