Regarding 68585087

We are considering Font Book's "serious error" warning to be an Apple bug.
</blockquote>

So I'll close this report.

From discussions with the original reporter, and the response to his questions of SIL_Fonts@sil.org, I conclude:

1) the alarming warning message is to be regarded an overreaction on the part of the Font Book code to seeing both "old style" kern tables and OpenType table.

2) FreeFont (the OTF version anyway) installs correctly in 10.5.6 and kerning functions properly.

3) Many other fonts are similarly affected, including non-free fonts and fonts not made with FontForge.

I wrote 02.03.2009 to Apple Developer Support http://developer.apple.com/contact/ regarding this, asking for their views and advice. I have not yet heard back from them.

Another test:

Made a copy of FreeSerif as TrueType as always, except with the "old kern tables" option turned off.

This installs correctly.

Also confirmed: Mac apps read the other kerning tables of this copy.

So that settles the cause of the problem.

This was reported to me by e-mail.

MacOS 10.5.6; PPC
in Font Book, run Validate Fonts command.
Free Serif font produced a "serious error": "'kern' table structure and contents"

Further tests showed:

  • This did not happen with previous releases of FreeFont
  • The same thing happens with the current release of the DejaVu fonts.
