When special keys aren't recognized properly, it seems to be difficult to determine what screen's understanding of the display's capabilities are. There's echo $:ku: and such, but that strips out special characters (like escape).

An option to echo to make it represent special characters would also be nice, so that if ku=\EOA, then "C-a : echo $:ku:" would produce "\EOA", "^[OA" or "\033OA" (etc) rather than just "OA".
