do you confirm that when using the current gnustep msys installer and atop of that installign the current nightly tarballs of core, tarting with make, do you still get that problem? Because it works for me.

Did you update GNUstep from SVN and rebuild make?

I changed gnustep-make to use the full path to 'install'
on MinGW. This is much more robust, but it's unclear
if it would actually fix this issue, since it's hard
to see how this issue could occur in the first place.
Lu, if you have any more information on the issue, it would be
appreciated. Anything special about your setup ? Can you
run
make messages=yes install
and see what happens ?
Thanks

Yes, I think make should use the full path to the install program. I guess it should determine that path and check that it works at configure time.

"install -p -m 644 gui.make \
/usr/local/share/GNUstep/Makefiles/Additional/gui.make
./install: line 1: 1: command not found"
That is due to gnustep-make's configure, which for mingw32 sets
INSTALL="install -p"
Presumably when executed inside gnustep-gui's makefile, that
tries to execute the file 'INSTALL' in the local directory,
which starts with the line "1 Installation". So, the error
./install: line 1: 1: command not found
would mean that it tried to execute INSTALL (as a shell
script ?), and found an error on line 1, because it tried
to execute "1 Installation", but the command "1" was
"not found".
I think on other platforms we try to have INSTALL set to
a full path to avoid issues. Eg, on my machine it is set to
"/usr/bin/install -c".
Maybe using a full path there would help ?
Thanks

I was able to complete a build on Windows XP right now. Without further imfornation, I would consider this bug as invalid.

I have had the problem before. Unfortunately I can't remember now how I solved it. It's definitely some Windows issue though, perhaps a bad path in /etc/fstab. Maybe you can install MinGW from scratch again. Sorry I've completely forgotten the fix...

Same here, I also recompiled all of GNUstep on MS Windows today and it worked.
What I noticed is that the results you are getting aren't consistent with executing INSTALL in gui, it rather looks like executing ANNOUCE. Could you please do a "ls -l" in the gui directory and report back the results?

sorry, I cannot reporduce this problme. I just installed from today's daily snapshots.
Are you using the recent windows installer supplied by gnustep?
I configured base/gui/back with the following:
$ ./configure --with-installation-domain=SYSTEM && make GNUSTEP_INSTALLATION_DOMAIN=SYSTEM install
while make:
$ ./configure --prefix=/g/GNUstep --with-config-file=/g/GNUstep/GNUstep/GNUstep.conf
I installed into G:, change your drive letter accordingly.
This kind of configuration overwrites the installation supplied by GNUstep effectively udpating it.

There is a file: core/gui/INSTALL
and file: core/gui/install.sh
When do make on MinGW, system will call "core/gui/INSTALL" instand of "core/gui/install.sh", then make process failed.
So must tell make:
./install.sh
not
./install
