There is now documentation for using the fonts in LaTeX, in the usage.txt file, since the release earlier this year.

The LuaTeX issues aren't really FreeFont problems. So I'll re-close this issue.

OK it's silly for us to be replying to a closed report, so I'll re-open it for the time being. Let's say I need to provide some documentation on using FreeFont in these LaTeX implementations.

Guiseppe: Yes, I suppose you're right. It's a big complex thing for which an article-style document would be in order. Right now I'm still struggling with a release though.

Khaled: Oh that's embarrassing I didn't look more closely at the Arabic and Sinhala in the LuaTeX tests. Indeed the Arabic is reversed by LuaTeX, and the necessary transpositions of Sinhala aren't happening (although ligatures are... that's funny).

I might somehow construct separate tests for LuaTeX and XeTeX. I'm not very happy to put a LuaTeX-specific command in to change the text direction. It would be really cool for a file that just contains natural-language text and standard font features this to be rendered very similarly in the two implementations, of course.

One other thing: if you put the output from LuaTeX and XeTeX in a tabbed window and flipping between them, other small differences appear:
1) slight difference in line spacing
2) expecially in the Cyrillic examples, letter spacing isn't the same
The differences are small (maybe 1-2pt) but cumulative.

Thanks!

Hi Seve, few comments:
- you don’t need \selectfont after \fontspec commands
- LuaTeX’s OT layout code does not support any Indic scripts, not yet
- the Arabic sample is broken sonce the text is rendered LTR, you should enclose it in {\luatextextdir TRT …} (ideally, bidi package should provide cross engine support for this, and though it claims LuaTeX support in practice it doesn’t really work).

Hi Steve - Very nice. I sent the test file and pdf on to Khaled and Will (Robertson) for their possible comments.

Now we really need an article about freefont for TUGboat :).

Cheers,
karl

Hey Karl,

I have now tested it under

LuaTeX, Version beta-0.70.1-2011052008
XeTeX 3.1415926-2.3-0.9997.6 (TeX Live 2012/dev/Debian)
XeTeX 3.1415926-2.2-0.9995.2 (TeX Live 2009/Debian)

It works really well. Check out the attached freefont-features tests.

(If you can improve on the .tex file, that would be cool. I'm pretty new to this fontspec stuff.
I used fontspec because that's how I learned to do it first, but luatex only started supporting that recently.)

Cheers!

If you have specific OpenType things that work better in xetex than luatex, the luatex developers would like to know ...

I think with xetex and luatex, no package is called for.

Lately I have been testing in xetex. It is really the most complete showcase for GNU FreeFont's features I know. (Some fixes to GNU FreeFont have been made in this regard, and some bug reports made to xetex.)

Cheers!

(For Karl Berry)

Would like to use FreeFont in LaTeX, something like
\usepackage{gnufreefont}
