Ah ... yes ... problem with assumption about the active theme.

I think this bug report is invalid. By setting a break point in TilesBox drawRect: I can clearly see that this method gets called after the image file is selected. At that point GSTheme returns a GSDrawTiles value of nil, so nothing is drawn. Why this is happening is application logic and should be changed in the thematic application.

There still might be a gui bug behind all this, at least it will be on a completely different level.

In Thematic.app, when you go to load a button image (click on the black, blank space in the inspector window and then select an image in the open panel), the image inspector window is no longer updated and remains blank until you do something to get it to redraw like clicking on the sliders.
The code to load an image calls -setNeedsDisplay: to get the inspector to redraw with the newly loaded image ... this seems to be hat is no longer working.
