I made a bit of research and I figured out the exact condition under which this (very general) problem can be reproduced.

- There must be two paragraphs.
- Both paragraphs must be hyphenated.
- The first paragraph must have a descent one the second soft line.
- The second paragraph must have an ascent on the first soft line.
- There must be enough horizontal distance between the ascent and the descent for shoving to happen.
- Either one of the descent or the ascent must be tall enough so the final distance between baselines is bigger than it would be.

Any situation where all these conditions are met cause the crash. If the interline seperation is set to zero, the descent of a "j" (and enough exponents on the line below) can cause the crash.

Daniel Bump has recently isolated that bug in a different context: parenthesis shoved in a fraction. The crash file is named bump.tm.

When two lines are shoved into each other and

* they are both wrapped around
* the first line descending part is a matrix

Then moving the cursor in in the first line will cause an immediate core dump.

If the second line ascending part is also a matrix, it will crash too. But if the first line edescending part is a formula with many nested indices, that will no crash.
Procedure

Open the shove_crash.tm. The caret will be placed on the first line. Try to move the caret, or click on the first line.
