with mounting the /proc filesystem everything works and the warning are issued. The rest is a bug in FreeBSD.

I added warnings and suggested workarounds for the libkvm problem ... please test and let me know if they work.

The hackers mail.ing list archive is interesting ... it appears that there certainly was (and given the behavior you are seeing on a new system, presumably still is) a bug in libkvm which means that it doesn't work (at least for what we need to do) pn a system where /proc is not mounted.
Unfortunately there is no mention of any workaround possible, so I guess the best thing for the moment is to add a warning to tell people about the issue and that they need to mount /proc.

I am not a freebsd expert, but as far as i understand some functions of libkvm require procfs, some not. Read here:

http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/hackers/2005-01/0034.html

the post is old though, I have the error on 7.0 release and on upcoming 7.1 beta.

When I chekc here though,
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=kvm&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+7.0-RELEASE&format=html

there is no reference to requiring procfs to be mounted.

Ok ... so for practical purposes libkvm is broken on FreeBSD 7.0, so presumably the thing to do is disable the use of libkvm in gnustep on FreeBSD?

apparently the usage of libkvm requires mounting /proc. Once /proc is mounted, autogsdoc works.

The error message -

Error: libkvm does not return arguments for the current process

Is quite clear that NSProcessInfo is not trying to use the /proc filesystem. but is instead using the bsd specific libkvm mechanism.

The message 'cannot open /proc/67254/mem' presumably comes from within libkvm, which suggests that this might be a libkvm bug.

runnign autogsdoc fails with:

%autogsdoc -Project WebServices -DocumentationDirectory WebServices -MakeFrames YES -ConstantsTemplate TypesAndConstants -MakeDependencies WebServices/dependencies WebServices.gsdoc WebServices.h GWSBinding.h GWSCoder.h GWSConstants.h GWSDocument.h GWSElement.h GWSMessage.h GWSPortType.h GWSService.h GWSType.h
NSProcessInfo: cannot open /proc/67254/mem
Error: libkvm does not return arguments for the current process
Abort (core dumped)

I think NSProcessInfo is attempting to use the proc file ssytem, which is empty here on FreeBSD. Just the /proc dir exists, because for comaptibility reasons it can be enabeld and mounted..

[FreeBSD 7.0 x86]
