No need for this to be in the gnash executable. We already have the 'gnash' shell script. It can do this kind of a test and then run gtk-opengl-gnash or gtk-agg-gnash as needed. Do you know of a program which it could run which would return the first line of the code you suggest? Oh, wait, you're anonymous, so you won't get this email. Log in next time!

Right now, rendering engines are built in at compile time, selected through #ifdef.
It would be nice to have a runtime option to do stuff like

if(graphicsDriverSupportsDRI() && DRIEnabled())
UseOpenGL();
else
FallBackToAggOrCairo();
