Uhm, the pixel format debug message is there actually.

- Remote X: DEBUG: Framebuffer pixel format is RGB565 (little-endian host)
- Local X: DEBUG: Framebuffer pixel format is BGRA32 (little-endian host)

You can't; GDK will try to use it and if it's not available will automatically fall back on a normal image buffer. But I can add a print if you want to see the resulting image type.

It would be nice if MIT-SHM were automatically disabled
when not available.
In the current code, MIT-SHM is found to be available
(as it is, on the remote display). Only, it seems
to be unusable, and results in Gnash dying with unfriendly
message:

The program 'lt-gtk-gnash' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)'.
(Details: serial 234 error_code 10 request_code 146 minor_code 1)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
