Then, if you organize your project so that "make dist" is not
run often, the *.po files should only be regenerated rarely,
and CVS conflicts should be rare.

I'm closing the report; if you can submit a "how to reproduce"
instruction then feel free to reopen it.

I'm using the gettextize one. Seems this is caused by git-svn somehow and should probably be closed.

Are you using your own Makefile in the po/ directory with the *.po
files, or the one installed by gettextize?

In the first case, you can organize the workflow differently,
so that you keep a .pot file with line numbers uncommitted, and
commit into CVS only the *.po files msgmerged with option
--no-location. Before handing out the PO files to translators,
you then need to msgmerge again - with --add-location - so that
the translators get the numbers, for context.

In the second case, the Makefile does not regenerate the *.po files
when you do "make", only through "make update-po" or "make dist".
The latter is rarely done concurrently by several developers;
usually only the release manage does this.

Currently with gettext, code changes cause all the filename/line number comments to be modified. This means that version control systems consider po/*.po as modified. I propose to have a way to split those out of the .po files so the po files do no need to be committed. This would require GUI po editors that know about the filename/line number comments to know about the separate file with the information in it.
