I closed it. Why the OP cannot close their own ticket, I cannot venture a guess :).

Best,
Karl

Sounds good to me too. I have now subscribed to the gnash@ list, and have found it's extremely low traffic now. Thank you to everyone who replied to this request. Oddly I do not have permissions to close the bug report I opened (why is it so?), but you can close it now.

Speaking as one of the people who help with mailing list stuff:

1. We were not aware that gnash was an announcement list. So we were blithely approving whatever real mail came through. Now we won't.

2. I've changed the description on the savannah page and on the mailman page to say announcements only.

3. I've made all the list members, present and future, be moderated. We do this for many other lists, it's not a problem.

4. It is not desirable to "reject" messages, ever. It causes backscatter spam and tends to get the server blacklisted. The list was and is set up in the normal way, to hold mail for discarding or approval.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Benjamin, I have some more ideas in addition to idea 1 which I originally suggested and idea 2 which you just told us.

Idea 3. Set Mailman to automatically reject all cross-posted messages to the announcement list. One way to do that would be to set the "Ceiling on acceptable number of recipients for a posting" filter to "one recipient". I don't remember if that pref holds posts for moderation or just rejects them. Another way would be to use the "Hold posts with header value matching a specified regexp" filter.

Idea 4. Change the announcement list's description visible at https://savannah.gnu.org/mail/?group=gnash from "Announcements, etc..." to "Low-volume list for announcements only".

Idea 5. Rename the mailing list -unavailable- to gnash-announce@gnu.org. Maybe Mailman supports this directly; if not, maybe the Savannah admins would do it for you. If they won't, then create a -unavailable- list, use the Mass Subscribe Users command to add all members of the old list to the new list, then delete the old list.

Idea 6. Change the GNU Mailman settings for -unavailable- to enable moderation.
The disadvantage is that every day the appointed moderator(s) will get a message something like "The following 5 messages were posted to the -unavailable- mailing list and are now awaiting moderation. Please click the following link to visit the list moderator web interface to accept or reject the messages."
I don't remember if Mailman lets you change the standard rejection message. If it does let you change it, you could change it to "This is an announcement-only list. Please do not post anything here unless you are a Gnash developer announcing a new version."

-unavailable- is supposed to be a low-volume list for announcements. I see from my inbox that people have been abusing it and cross-posting from gnash-dev@gnu.org.

I don't see the point in another list. I'll politely ask anyone sending mail to -unavailable- to desist, though. Anyone else?

Thanks for all your gnash-related work.

A request: Please create a gnash-announce mailing list. Then when new versions of Gnash come out, please announce them there. Also please announce when new builds of the Firefox plugin for Windows come out; that is what I am especially interested in.
(If you want, you can announce such things on the other mailing lists too; but I don't want to subscribe to those higher-traffic lists.)
