When processing the EXISTS response, IMAIL tries to fetch the UIDs and flags of the new messages.  If the most recent message, before the new messages, was expunged, however, IMAIL will fetch a range of sequence numbers that does not exist, because it has not yet recorded that the recent message was expunged.

What a pain the IMAP is!
