Yury,

I had never heard of ReactOS. That's interesting.

I see that it is Windows NT compatible.
You know, Windows NT doesn't support OpenType natively, either.

However, the Adobe OpenType O & A page says:
"Users of Windows 98 and Windows NT® 4.0 can get both
OpenType and Type 1 support from ATM Light. ATM Light
for Windows is available for free download from the
Adobe Web site"

Perhaps that, or something like it, will help.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for an explanation.

I am not .ttf guru. Monospace flag somewhere in .ttf headers was just my suggestion.

.ttf version of FreeMono was included into ReactOS (WinNT compatible open source OS). I noticed that FreeMono is not seen as monospace by ReactOS. After that I installed FreeMono into WinXP and it also do not recognize FreeMono as monospace...

In Windows I can install OpenType version of the font, but ReactOS currently support only .ttf fonts...

It will be great if FreeMono will be changed to be recognized as monospace by Windows/ReactOS as other free monospace fonts from Liberation and DejaVu packs.

Hi, Yury,

As stated in the INSTALL and README files, OpenType versions are preferred in Windows.

Please let me know if this does not work for you.

So far as I know, there is no "mark" for monospace fonts. The font display system determines that by looking at the glyphs, and applying an algorithm. It was requested that FreeMono should contain some zero-width characters. Windows TrueType algorithm results in the font being seen as not monospace, but its OpenType algorithm results in it being seen as monospace.

This issue was discussed at length on the freefont-bugs list,
and in these bug reports:
Mono 0-width chars: zero-width or space?
https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?23593
combining marks (0-width characters) in Mono

FreeMono is not marked as monotype font in .ttf header.
As result FreeMono is not listed in Windows font selection dialog if only monotype fonts are requested.
