Please don't use the bug system as a mailing list for discussions when there isn't an actual identified bug.

From reading the comments, it seems that you don't have bug but a question of how the API works and you are wondering about the right way to do something.

Please move this discussion to one of the public and searchable mailing lists at:

discuss-gnustep@gnu.org,
gnustep-dev@gnu.org,
-unavailable-

These are all based on mailman. They are public and can be searched, linked to and referenced via the gnu.org site.

All of that being said, your concerns about the API being "wasteful of resources" doesn't seem valid since, in both cases, the initial object which is being replaced (the clipview and the text container) is released and deallocated. There shouldn't be any waste as far as memory is concerned.

Thanks, GC

I received what seems a private email from my report, seeing that the comment is not here.

This is not what I want, and not the purpose of my comment.

I don't feel like pasting/quoting a private email here so I can reply, neither like replying in private. For me the comment is not valid in this discussion unless it is made public so I can reply.

Maintain the discussion in public, please. Interested people could join it, and it could be referenced.

I think it was just a misunderstanding.

hello, I have API problems, two examples: create a scrollview with the clipview flipped, and create a textview with a subclass of textstorage.

In the scrollview problem I ended using setContentView, so the default clipview loaded is a waste of resources.

In the texview problem I ended using replaceTextStorage, so the default textstorage loaded is another waste of resources.

So I think that I don't know the proper way to do it right or that the API needs initializers like initWithFrame:contentView: (scrollview), initWithFrame:textStorage: (textview) or another elegant way to not waste resources.

Maybe it makes the API bigger but in my opinion not for nothing.
