Problems have been fixed in the most recent 0.20.3 installer, which works on w2k.

Given that w2k is still supported by Microsoft and is still widely used, I think it's reasonable to expect that GNUstep should be installable there.

I too think it is a packaging issue or an msys issue (the crashes). Sicne using both the old environment and the newe one, I installed current tarballs,; so it is not something which is in -core.

The icon problem instead could be w2k/xp feature dependent...

0.19.2 has gnustep-back-0.13.2
0.9.1 has 0.13.0

I think it's more a packaging issue though I'm still investigating.

Could you please check which back versions those two release shipped with? That way we can try to find out what changes in back that could result in these differnces. As it works fine for XP it is most likely that we now use some more advanced Windows function that is not precent in Win2000.

Is it possible to get a back trace from the crash? That would help to find out whether that is related to any of the other listed issues.

Does thsi also happen when recompiling GNUstep from scratch on a Win2000 machine?

The only code change that I could find that could result in the black background was the one from 2008-02-14.

Programs crash. Also icons and other images show a black rather than white/transparent background. This problem does not occur with installer 0.9.1.

To replicate: install 0.19.2 system and core installers, then install SystemPreferences installer and try to run SystemPreferences.
Result: bad icons and occational crashes.
