I have made these four characters U+200C-F to be zero-width in FreeMono CVS.

This follows a related decision about Combining Diacritical Marks.

The issues are

1) a user who expects in the mono-width font to see a space for each character may be dismayed

2) Windows doesn't recognize TrueType fonts with zero-width characters as being mono-spaced. However, OpenType fonts with zero-width characters can be recognized as mono-spaced.

There is a discussion about "zero-width", or "non-advancing" characters.

http://unicode.org/faq/unsup_char.html

Basically, these characters are meant to be dealt with by the rendering system: no glyph should be displayed.

One alternative is to put a glyph there to embarrass an ignorant rendering system. But in the present cases, I think making the bounding box to be zero-width will suffice.

This is from Jacob Poon's report of 2007-10,
https://savannah.gnu.org/support/?106274

? what is right here? a glyph or a zero width space?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Zero width non-joiner (U+200C), Zero width joiner (U+200D) in non-italic fonts are blank instead of showing proper glyphs. The bug does not exist in other font families.

Left-to-right mark (U+200E), right-to-left mark (U+200F) in Bold font are blank instead of showing proper glyphs. The bug does not exist in other font families.
