>Does anyone have a good argument for leaving both items open?

Just that this bug has some good discussion that should not be missed in fixing bug #20606.  There was, until now, no pointer from bug #20606 to this bug, so closing it caused information to be lost (IMO).  But just now I've added such a pointer, so we can close it again (and I am).

I wish that the bug tracking system had the ability to merge bugs, like the Debian BTS can do.  Much more useful than just closing bugs and marking them as duplicates.

I had closed this bug, because it's essentially a duplicate of bug #20606  That's why I set the status to "Duplicate".

Does anyone have a good argument for leaving both items open?

It would also be a good idea for PSPPIRE to read a configuration file on startup (as does PSPP).  See also bug #24535.

Reopening.  I suspect this bug must have been closing accidentally.

It is easy to detect that a file is a system file or portable file: we already have code to do so in data/any-reader.c.  It works based on the file's content, not its name.

We could probably assume that any file that appears to be text, but which is not a system file or portable file, is a syntax file.

This logic would not have to be exclusive to psppire.  It would also be useful to accept system and portable file names on the pspp command and perform an implicit 'GET' or 'IMPORT' on them.

Yes.  I neglected this in some earlier releases.  I think that that was a mistake.

I think that the issue of command line argument processing needs to be one of the first considerations after the forthcoming release.

Some of the questions to be considered are:

  • Which command line options need to be common between pspp and psppire ?  The common ones should have a common parsing subroutine.

  • How should psppire know what to do with a filename given as an argument?  It has to decide whether to open it as a system file, portable file or syntax file.  Can we rely on the filename suffix?

  • It would be useful to be able to give a syntax fragment as a string on the command line.

  • We need to make sure that we get the syntax of the command line right, as subsequent changes in later versions causes pain for users.

Hi

I would love if the syntax of PSPPire would be changed to "PSPPire [<syntax or data file>] [-commands]". If  PSPPire accepts a syntax or data file as its first parameter it is possible to create a file-association between .sps and .sav so you could start PSPPire by clicking on teh .sps and the .sav file. This is a common way of working in a GUI environment.

Now:
Usage: psppire {|--help|--version|--no-splash}
Wished:
Usage: psppire [<syntax or datafile>][|--help|--version|--no-splash]

The benefit would be a greater useability. The drawback....well it wil cost time to implement.
