This evidently won't be applied.

Hum... We could discuss now if Gnash should unblank the screen or not. Personally I think it is up to the user what he wants to do with the screen (Gnash is no window manager after all). For example, one could want to keep the screen blank while (re)starting Gnash and activate it only on demand (typical scenario for a wall PC...).

In any case such an option should be configurable and the FB GUI currently is a mess when it comes to configuration :(

I suggest you keep your patch for yourself while we won't unblank the screen unless it can be configured via the config file...

Not so fast :-) FBIOPUT_POWERMODE may be unsupported, FBIOBLANK is still supported. I think it is a good idea to switch a screen on before you start using it so you are sure a user sees what you are displaying. The embedded device I'm using gnash on has the console on the framebuffer by default. The console will blank the screen after a while. When an application starts, the screen is not unblanked. I had to apply a similar patch the tinyx BTW. Both gnash and tinyx are run as root.

Indeed, I could not find FBIOPUT_POWERMODE in my header files. So just close this bug item?

Did you have problems with the power saving mode at all?

Note that sometimes the console itself can blank the screen when Gnash failed to switch to graphics mode. Blanking here means writing black pixels to the frame buffer. This happens when FB-Gnash is run as a normal user. Then Gnash is not allowed to manipulate tty and switch to graphics mode. The "text mode" means that the console still responds to keyboard events and stdout messes up the graphics (including the blinking cursor).

The only solution so far (besides running Gnash as root ugh) is to start another program before Gnash (as root) that does the switch. I do so for my embedded devices.

It seems FBIOPUT_POWERMODE is not present in the Linux 2.6.2x kernels nowadays. I simply based my code on the fbdevDPMS() function in fbdev.c from XFree86 (path xc/programs/Xserver/hw/tinyx/fbdev). Google points to the same file so I think it is safe to assume FBIOPUT_POWERMODE is something from the stone age :-)

Can you provide documentation for this command? I tried to google for FBIOPUT_POWERMODE but could not find much..

After all Gnash should restore the original state before terminating.

On some systems (if not all) the framebuffer is blanked by the console. When the framebuffer is used by another program, the framebuffer should be unblanked first. The attached patch contains the differences against gui/fb.cpp to make the necessary ioctl calls.
