There's a patch reminder listed in the patches part, but I couldn't find an open bug here. If it's indeed a copy, I'm sorry.

i'm pretty sure there's already issues open on this topic ...

also, utf8 really doesnt play a role in the linux kernel at all, so i really dont know what you're implying in that statement

grep has a performance issue in an utf8 environment, where it's up to 10 times slower than in a non-utf8 environment.
Problem can be solved by exporting LANG=en_US for example on every call to grep before executing it, but an upstream solution would be much better and highly appreciated by a lot of people I guess, since utf8 is now also the standard in the linux-kernel and not all distributions want to patch grep for this.
