I've 'fixed' it by doing something sensible for non IPv4 addresses.

The IP component of GID reserves 4 byte, I'm currently filling it with the hash of the hosts address as a string. Given the fact that many applications have been using rfc1918 IP addresses and other components of the GID contain timestamps and other hash values, I think we should be safe (unique) enough for all practical purposes.

assignGloballyUniqueBytes assumes the address returned by -[NSHost address] is an ipv4 address. On OS X 10.4 and 10.5, it is an ipv6 address. I do not know about the address returned by earlier versions.
