distcheck works now with --enable-docbook for me.
the gnashref.texi error is still there, but will reopen a bug
only if I verify it's a real error

separate build tree, with --enable-docbook.
after the EXTRA_DIST trailing slash for dirs, 'make dist'
works fine locally (automake 1.96) but only w/out --enable-docbook.

I don't get this error. Are you building in the source tree ? Is this with or without --enable-docbook ?

I belive this is again due to directories added to EXTRA_DIST

Same error in branch now (on my system).
Actually the error in the topic is ignored, while this other
aborts:
cp: cannot overwrite directory `/home/strk/src/gnash/build/0.8.2/allgui_agg_gst_debugging/gnash-0.8.2/doc/C/usermanual' with non-directory

on gnashdev, make distcheck on head gives:
cp: cannot stat `./gnashuser.html': No such file or directory
