I don't think this falls within the remit of Gnash.

As the other plugin is installed in a root only writeable directory, you'd have to be root to do this. As noted, an extension would be the better way to do this. If you know any Firefox extension coders, we'd love a patch. :-)

Personally, I just don't go to sites than don't use Gnash. :-)

That browser extension is pretty much what my friend wants; thanks for pointing it out.

That extension is very small and simple, apart from the various Flash DLLs it includes - although these parts are not licensed explicitly as free software - I'll ask the author to sort this out.

I suggest including an extension like this as part of the Gnash utilities, but one that doesn't redistribute a range of Flash DLLs but instead absorbs any existing ones.

I agree that Gnash itself ought not to modify other mozilla plugins, but I think a separate but included utility to do so would greatly help adoption.

If its not included in the Gnash builds, mentioning it in the FAQ would be okay too.

I mean browser extension, of course. http://www.sephiroth.it/weblog/archives/2006/10/flash_switcher_for_firefox.php describes something of the sort.

Well, it's probably not really Gnash's business to go round modifying other mozilla plugins, even if it were possible to swap them on the fly. A shell script would be rather more successful at swapping between the two plugins (just moving or renaming them alternately), but even then it would probably only take effect after restarting the browser.

Unless anyone else has an idea how it could be done. A browser plugin might be more effective, but I've no idea if they have that sort of capability.

I was promoting Gnash last night and my friend suggested they would try it out but would keep Adobe Flash plugin around for SWFs that Gnash can't yet render; and he asked if there was an easy way to toggle back to Adobe if Gnash wasn't ready yet when they are both installed.

Ideally, the Gnash browser plugin would detect the presense of the Adobe Flash plugi when it is installed, and move it out of the way so that Gnash is the default SWF decoder, but have an option in the right click menu to abort Gnash for this SWF and use the Adobe decoder.

This would greatly help adoption of Gnash by "open source" advocates (unlike we free software advocates who will not install proprietary SWF players) and raise awareness of the project.

Ubuntu currently offers users a choice of Gnash 'XOR' Adobe Flash plugin when their users first browse a webpage with a SWF file; it would be better if this choice was 'AND' :-)
