I have a fix for the XML install problem, it'll just have to wait till I get home in a few days from traveling and conferences to get the fix checked in. Although this is a simple patch, my manual rewrite is a huge one, so I need to make sure I have a few hours to
get it checvked in after heavy rearranging of directories and files.

alright, bug at comment #12 is fixed for me now,
so the only left over for me is that as of comment #11, which
is the .xml files being installed in a weird directory.
Really not a blocker for me ...

Sorry, I'm loosing cycles, need a vacation.
The new error is likely at ./configure time:
ERROR: No DocBook2X tools installed!
Either install it from http://docbook2x.sourceforge.net
or .deb users: apt-get install docbook docbook2x docbook-utils
docbook-xml docbook-xsl texinfo xsltproc
or configure without --enable-docbook
configure: error: Please install required packages

building and installing works with latest commit,
only odd thing the .xml install and a C subdir in the sharedir...
I don't go deep in details as I belive rob is already aware of
that and working on it.

It build before, as we always used the lower level commands, which have been depreciated by their packages to use wrapper scripts. It will still build the old way, but the only if the wrappers aren't found. There appear to be several versions of these utilities for converting docbook, with similar names and differing functionality.
The install location is fine, thats where Gnome Docs go, although it looks like not all files got installed. As our Gnome Help support has never worked in the Gnash GUI, we're not going to bother to install these till then.
The encoding problem is odd, that option works just fine for me on Ubuntu, don't know why it doesn't work for you.

${prefix}/share/gnash/doc/gnash/C/

I see 'make install' ignores the errors in doc/C with latest commit, so it completes now. Anyway, the error comes froM:
/usr/bin/docbook2texi --encoding=us-ascii//TRANSLIT /home/strk/src/gnash/gnash-head/doc/C/gnash.xml
-e Usage: jw [<options>] <sgml_file>
where <options> are:

(default is docbook)
-b|--backend <backend>: Specify the backend (destination format)
(default is html)
-c|--cat <file>: Specify an extra SGML open catalog
-n|--nostd: Do not use the standard SGML open catalogs
-d|--dsl <file>|default|none: Specify an alternate style sheet

With the newest commits (2008-02-20) I get an ERROR
at ./configure time:
ERROR: No DocBook2X tools installed!
Either install it from http://docbook2x.sourceforge.net
or .deb users: apt-get install docbook docbook2x
docbook-utils docbook-xml docbook-xsl texinfo
xsltproc
Still, I have all of them at latest version.
The message comes out if:
test x"$DB2X_XSLTPROC" = x -o x"$DB2X_TEXIXML" = x -o x"$MAKEINFO" = x -o x"$XSLTPROC" = x
DB2X_XSLTPROC:
configure:51008: checking for db2x_xsltproc
configure:51027: found /usr/bin/db2x_xsltproc
DB2X_TEXIXML:
This label is only checked for if test x$DB2X_TEXI = x
DB2X_TEXI depends on existenc of any of:
db2x_docbook2texi docbook2texi docbook2texi.pl
configure:51096: checking for db2x_docbook2texi
configure:51130: result: no
configure:51096: checking for docbook2texi
configure:51115: found /usr/bin/docbook2texi
So, the second attempt is found, and DB2X_TEXIXML check
is never reached.

If you actually get the docs to build, you'll discover the contents are totally scrambled. A random part of the reference pages are the start, the real intro is lost till about 3/4 of the way through. So worse than an install problem, we need to fix the docs before the release.
btw, your install error messages looks like a bad docbook2x install, and not a problem with Gnash. I built and installed the docs on both Fedora and Ubuntu just fine today.

Mon 18 Feb 2008 07:38:16 AM UTC, comment #3:
Ok, the original problem was I had a file owned by root.
This was likely due to 'sudo make install' creating files.
So, one problem is that 'make' does nothing while 'make install'
creates the files (under doc/C).
Another problem is that creating those file fails for me,
which seems a problem with the tool used for output:
Can't use an undefined value as an ARRAY reference at /usr/bin/db2x_texixml line 1793.
Note that it used to work fine here before the change.
There are a lot of other error messages too, attached.
The failing command is:
/usr/bin/db2x_texixml --encoding=us-ascii//TRANSLIT --to-stdout gnash.txml > gnash.texi
(file #15063)

There is an amazing lack of information in this bug report... Try running "make install SHELL='sh -x'" to see what the problem is. I/O errors may have nothing to do with building Gnash. I build cvs HEAD on both 32 and 64 bit installations of Ubuntu Gutsy and Hardy, and never get this error.
Did you configure with or without --enable-docbook ?
