Karl Berry wondered why there were entries like

foo.html foo.es.html

in many of the .symlinks files. A few people complained about that (ending up in the wrong page on some proprietary systems).

This is what I replied to him:

AFAIU these symlinks were made because GNU Spain and other external sites referred to all articles as .es.html. So when there was no Spanish translation, you got 404. The Spanish leader(s) remove the relevant symlink when they install a new translation.

Let me ask them, the above is merely a speculation on my part; I don't know the real reason.
