The new WDR video stream relies on rtmp, which is for another bug. Marking this as fixed, as the xml parsing problem is fixed.

This should more or less work now. Characters with the wrong encoding won't display properly, but it won't interrupt parsing. The SWF is no longer used by WDR, so it probably isn't expected to play anything.

Well, I am new in libxml. I browsed through the reference and I couldn't find a function which would say which encoding will it use when I call xmlReadMemory.

I only found xmlParseEncodingDecl in parseInternals but this would use a xmlParserCtxtPtr which is (I think) created internally by xmlReadMemory and (I think) destroyed before return. Futhermore I'm really not sure that this function would be the good one.

I am really sorry but at this moment I have no idea how to improve this code.

That's a relatively new problem.

Indeed the patch is a bit inelegant, but most of it does seem to be enforced by libxml. Particularly annoying is the fact that it takes a failure in parsing the complete document, then a failure to parse in balanced chunks even to reach the point where we check if an invalid character is the reason; then the whole operation is repeated, once for each of the three encodings (including possibly the encoding that's just been tried).

Libxml only offers detailed error reporting and / or the ability to change encoding at certain points, so that may turn out to be the best way to do it. But is there a way to avoid trying the same encoding twice? That would make it a lot better.

The first problem here is that the xml files(e.g.: http://www.wdr.de/themen/global/webmedia/webtv/400/016/data.xml) use ISO-8859-1 encoding but they declare they use utf-8. So the parser uses utf-8 and it fails.
This patch would fix the issue by retriing the parsing with different encodings if the error is caused by an invalid character.
I know that it's not too elegant but I couldn't find any better solution...

Work on gnash a bit more.

Obviously the proprietary flash player will work if you set it up properly, but that's not really an appropriate topic for the gnash bug tracker.

Thanks for your answers. Do you have any idea how to look such web tv under Linux?

This will be an interesting testcase for RTMP:

UNIMPLEMENTED: NetConnection.connect([string:rtmpt://cp21815.edgefcs.net:80/ondemand], [bool:true]): args after the first are not supported

The 0.8.1 release is old. The current CVS version of Gnash has solved some of the problems visible on your screenshot, but despite looking much better it still won't play the video. That probably won't be fixed by the next release (though you never know...). SWF8 is still not officially supported.

I've posted the URL on the wiki (http://wiki.gnashdev.org/wiki/index.php/Web_TV) because we would like to support it in the future and we can keep track of it that way.

Hi,

I am using Firefox 2.0.0.11 on Windows XP/Vista and on Ubuntu 7.10 (with Gnome). Under Windows I can look at http://www.wdr.de/themen/global/webmedia/webtv/getwebtvextrakt.phtml?p=400&b=016&ex=3 but under Ubuntu I can not. I don't see the menu on left hand side, I don't see the movie. I see the logos left and right hand side on top. (see attached picture)

I have deinstalled gnash 0.8.1-0ubuntu3 but then Firefox is missing either Adobe Flash or Gnash. Adobe Flash is installed but Firefox still requires one of both plugins. So I tried gnash again but still no movie under Firefox.

Can you help?

Andreas
