We shouldn't care about the size of size_t any more, so I'm closing this. (And gcc4.3 works fine for me).

It works fine for me with gcc4.3, but in any case we've switched to using boost::format for most logging at the moment, which makes the size of size_t mostly irrelevant.

I won't try to get this conformed before gcc 4.3.1 is out.

Fri 18 Jan 2008 01:25:20 PM UTC, original submission:

Using gcc configure failed to determine the printf format for size_t (%lu in my case)

dps$ uname -a
Linux dps 2.6.23.13 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jan 13 22:33:38 GMT 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
dps$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.3.0 20080102 (experimental)
<all the rest snipped>

Investigation revealed that both %lu and %ld passed the printf format test so all subsequent test programs contained

#define SIZET_FMT "%lu"
#define SIZET_FMT "%ld"

which caused then to suffer indigestion even if compiling them should have worked. See the attached patch for a solution to the size_t printf format problem without this problem. See the attached config.log file if you do not believe me.

P.S. If you want a more complicated macro that might do a better job, and featues result caching, then drop an email to dps@simpson.demon.co.uk. My macro looks for output to stderr instead of -Werror. The first thing on the list which generates no output to stderr is the result.

Usage of the fancy macro is QU_PRINTF_FMT(<type>,<header files>).
