I added a value label, then went to the data sheet and typed
a letter 'a' in the first cell. Then I saw:

psppire: src/data/data-in.c:173: parse_number: Assertion `fmt_get_category (i->format) != FMT_CAT_CUSTOM' failed.
Aborted

This patch is a bit of a kludge, but works around the problem.

SPSS disallows using custom currency formats as input formats, and so PSPP has never allowed it either. The underlying reason is, presumably, that custom currency formats are, at best, difficult to parse and, at worst, ambiguous.

Is there actually a reason for this assertion? I don't get any problems if I remove it.

Create a variable. Change its format to a custom currency.
Click on the value labels column, and attempt to add a value.

You will get

psppire: src/data/data-in.c:203: parse_number: Assertion `fmt_get_category (i->format) != FMT_CAT_CUSTOM' failed.
Aborted
