Unlike your statement "xgettext doesn't handle these literals",
xgettext does handle this:

$ cat foo.java
_("Hello " + " World");
$ xgettext --omit-header -o - -k_ foo.java
#: foo.java:1
msgid "Hello World"
msgstr ""

Would it be possible for xgettext to exit with an error, when it encounters a concatenated String literal as an argument to one of the translation methods?

In Java an invalid input would look like this:

_("Hello " + " World");

Programmers sometimes do this if the String gets too long for a line disregarding the fact that xgettext doesn't handle these literals.

An error or a warning would be very helpful to identify these cases.
