(Sent the email to Christopher G Lewis, along with the following comments:)

I checked it out, and it looks like autoconf, at least in recent versions, automatically sets EXEEXT in AC_PROG_CC, based on the output that cc provides. It looks like we currently set exeext based on the value of OS_TYPE, as determined by AC_CANONICAL_HOST. The former seems like a much more reliable means of determining the proper extension for executables, and if it's being done for us automatically, so much the better.

I'm guessing that on your system, OS_TYPE matches *win32, but doesn't on Steve's setup. Does the attached patch break anything for you? (Steve, please try this as well, but note that current trunk requires autoconf-2.61; you may need to upgrade your autoconf.)

Sent by personal mail to me (Micah) by Steve Kenton (skenton at ou dot edu):

It looks to me like wget/src/Makefile.in needs a s/exeext/EXEEXT/g since configure automagically defines the all caps version and not the lower case version.

I tripped over this while testing a portable cross-compile tool chain build containing wget 1.10.2 on cygwin, but it seems to still be true in the cvs trunk. The above change fixed it for me. Gcc and Binutils seem to use exeext but just about everything else I looked at uses EXEEXT.

FYI - Steve
