It turns out that at least one of the problems is that
a string in the form "02/Jul/1992" evaluates to the number

  1. instead of 2 as expected in swf4 (it's fine for swf5 up).

Sorry, altought some movies were fixed, it wouldn't make sense to close this bug, as the bug in the original submission is still there...

For the bug of
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/lj/flash/1.swf?loadedlocation=email

It was related to the hit test.
Will be fixed on next commit, taking care of both the
boundary of text being dragged (too large now) and the _droptarget.

Both weren't considering layer (static) masks.

This movie:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/lj/flash/flash_a2.swf?loadedlocation=email
works in loading stuff. One unrelated failures seems to be with charset encoding

This movie:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/lj/flash/1.swf?loadedlocation=email
works in loading stuff. also works in relative dragging.
fails in dropping the dragged stuff.

(should file two separate bug reports for these two...)

Both the BBC languages movies have improved a bit (why?); the second now displays proper words instead of 'test' and the first still doesn't start, but sometimes plays some sound clips.

More movies that seem to have similar problems (doing something with the variables):

(from BBC languages)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/lj/flash/flash_a2.swf?loadedlocation=email

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/lj/flash/1.swf?loadedlocation=email (relative mouse drag also not implemented)

Looking at gnash -va, the movie gets the first variable (date1) successfully:

PC:915 - EX: ActionGetVariable
-- get var: date1=[string:02/Jul/1970]
After execution: PC 915, next PC 916, stack follows
Stack: "[string:02/Jul/1970]"

But that's the only one that it deals with. It then goes on to what looks like setting up the graphics.

I attach -v output with some debugging enabled.
It seems that the title itself is found in the loaded file, which makes me think loading of variables work fine, see the other variable names in the file and see with -va when are they used.
Some other part of the movie should likely use those variables to display different flash news...

Okay, loading isn't the problem. There's a sprite textmovie; the text file is identified and loaded, but it's still not displayed. I've attached the apparently relevant part of the -va output.

This SWF4 is supposed to display a scrolling text list from an external URL, but doesn't. It seems to be related to the loading of the file rather than rendering the text. But either way there is no debug info about about why it's not working.

SWF:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/flash/flashscroll.swf?myfile=/onthisday/hi/themes/conflict_and_war/northern_ireland/bombings_and_killings/timeline.txt&mysummary=Soldiers%20die%20in%20Warrenpoint%20massacre

Text:
